One of the two areas of geography is physical geography (also known as physiography). Physical geography is the natural sciences division that deals, in contrast to cultural or constructed environment, with the natural environments such as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere or geosphere.
The following can be split into physical geography into several industries or related disciplines.
Geomorphology focuses on a knowledge of the Earth's surface and its forming processes both in today's and in the past. Geomorphology as an area has numerous sub-fields that deal with the different landforms from different settings, for instance desert geomorphology and river geomorphology, although these subsections are generally tectonic or climatic, connected by the central mechanisms that cause them. Geomorphology aims at understanding landform history and dynamics by combining field observation, physical experimentation and mathematical modelling. and anticipate future changes (Geomorphometry).
Hydrology primarily addresses the quantities and quality of water that moves, accumulates and is characterised by the hydrological cycle on the ground surface and in soil and rocks near the surface. The field therefore covers water in rivers, lakes, aquifers and to an extent glaciers, in which the field investigates the processes and dynamics of various water bodies. Hydrology has traditionally had a major engineering link and so evolved in the study a primarily quantitative method; nevertheless, it has an earth science side which incorporates the system approach. It has subfields that investigate particular bodies of water or its connection with other spheres like limnology and eco-hydrology, similar to most areas in physical geography.
The study of glaciers and ice sheets is glaciology, or more frequently cryosphere or ice. As continental glaciers and as alpine glaciers, glaciology grouped the latter (ice sheets). Although study in the fields is comparable to research into both ice sheet and glacier dynamics, the former tends to focus on the interaction between ice sheets and the present climate, and the latter on the influence of glaciers on the landscape. There are also a wide variety of subfields in glaciology that examine the causes and processes involved in ice sheets and glaciers, such as snow and glacial geology.
Biogeography is a science that addresses the organisms' geographical patterns and processes. Biogeography emerged via Alfred Russel Wallace as a field of study, although before the end of the 20th century the discipline was regarded as historical and descriptive. The main impetus for the study has since its start been platform tectonics and theory of biogeography. The majority of topics may be divided into five subfields: island biogeography, paleobiogeography, phylosogeography, animal geography and plant geography.
Climatology is climate science, which has been formally described as weather conditions for a long time as average. Climatology examines both the characteristics of micro (local) and the macro (global) climates and the natural and anthropological impacts. The subject is also divided largely into the climates of various places and the study of specific events and times as climate and tropical palaeoclimate cyclone plaster.
Meteorology is an interdisciplinary study of the atmosphere focusing on weather and short-term forecasting (in contrast with climatology). Field research took thousands of years, but significant weather progress happened only in the 18th century. Weather is an observed meteorological occurrence that enhances and explains meteorology.
Soil geography is concerned with the distribution of soils throughout the territory. This field is essential for both physical and pedological geography. The soils in the natural environment are studied in pedology. It covers pedogenesis, soil morphology, soil grade. Soil geography investigates the geographical distribution of soils in terms of topography, climatic conditions (water, air, temperature), land life (microorganism, plant, animal) and soil mineral elements (biogeochemical cycles).
Palaeogeography is a cross-disciplinary research which studies the material preserved in the strata to establish the geological distribution of continents. Nearly all proofs of continental locations originate from the geology of fossils or paleomagnetism. The utilisation of this data showed that continental drift, plate tectonics and supercontinents were occurring. This has in turn reinforced theory of palaeogeography, such as the Wilson cycle.
The study of the dynamic interaction between the ocean and land is the coastal geography which involves the physical geography (i.e., geology and oceanography of the coasts) and the human geography of the coast. coastal geography The processes of coastal weathering include an understanding of wave action, sediment transport, and weathering as well as how people interact with the shore. Although mostly geomorphic in its investigation, coastal geography is not only concerned with the coastline shape, but also with the causes and impacts of changes in the sea level.
Oceanography is the physical geographical discipline which examines the oceans and seas of the world. It covers a wide variety of issues including marine and ecosystem dynamics (biological oceanographies), ocean currents, waves and geophysical fluids (physical oceanography), tectonic plates and the geological floor plantation (geological oceanography) and flows of different physical and chemical substances in and across the ocean's borders (chemical oceanography). These varied subjects reflect several disciplines which oceanographers use to develop their understanding of the world ocean and of its dynamics.
Environmental geography is a geographical discipline which examines the spatial elements of human-natural interaction. The branch bridges the gaps between human and physical geography, requiring an understandings of geological, meteorological, hydrologic, biogeographical and geomorphological processes as well as of how the environment is conceived by human civilizations. Although in past studies, the branch was more prominent than it is currently with theories such as environmental determinism that relate society to the environment. The field of environmental management or human effects has significantly developed.
